Hi, I just uploaded version 0.2.1 to http://www.gliebe.de/self . This release fixes some bugs and allows to run Self on a display with 16 bit color depth. Best regards, Harald Gliebe

Would Self benefit from multiprocessors?

Hi all, I'm about to upgrade my home box to a SparcStation 20, which should run Self a bit more nimbly than the SS5 I've got now (although I'm amazed at how well Self does run on the 5). The question is, would Self benefit particularly from multiple processors being fitted to the SS20? Any notions? Thanks, Keith

The experience is definitely better on a Sun--very snappy on a 400Mhz machine. (Remember, the optimizing compiler is only on SPARC.) But I find it usable on the Mac...more like the early days of Self. And my Mac is very useful for all sorts of things. My bottom line: if you want a machine just for Self and you will be doing a LOT of Selfing you could consider the Sun. Otherwise I would recommend the Mac. Hope this helps. The latest version of Self may not have gotten out on the Web. If you do get a Mac, or if others need this, please bug me a bit so I will bug the folks here at Sun to get this out to you. (I use a version that runs natively under OS X. Hi everyone! I'd like to announce the availability of an alpha version of Self for Linux at http://www.gliebe.de/self/index.html It consists of the port of the runtime system, the non-inlining compiler and polymorphic inline caches to the x86 platform. It is based on Gordon Cichon's port. Please note that the current version is still alpha, but it allows you to run the Self user interface (ui2) and to get an impression of Self if you have no Sparc or Mac. FAQ and documentation

Is there a FAQ? I couldn't find one anyway. Just found the (very good) documentation for self under Self 4.0 at Sun - didn't think of looking there before. Printing postscript from Windows is a real bitch too. We must put a FAQ together as I think many curious people turn away from self before realising what it is and how important it is. Look at Squeak for inspiration in terms of activity. I think Self is the best thing I've seen since Smalltalk, and I surely would like to make it easy for others to get access to it and information about it. Happy holidays everyone.

Reason for closure/method discrepancy?

Can anyone justify closure treatment in self? It would seem to be more in the spirit of self to merge closures with methods and perform a purely dynamic message lookup, that is search block locals/parameters, then follow parent slots (outer closures - and now deprecated 'methods'). This would have an interesting side effect of erasing the difference between closures, methods and objects - any of these could be stuck into a slot and sent at least a 'value' message. A method implementation would become therefore just another object (with local, parameter and parent slots) which is sent a 'value' message by default, but can accept other messages! Then it is up to the programmer to decide whether to write a 'block' inside a 'method' (an anonymous closure), create a method (a named closure) or send messages to object or methods (that are also objects) interchangeably. As for the non-local return out of closures, is there a really good reason for it? Why not return to the outer scope (other than perhaps a clumsier syntax)? Forgive my possible stupidity - I am stuck in x86 world and haven't been able to explore self personally. I am amazed at the clarity of reasoning behind self, with this minor exception. Perhaps someone can clarify this.

Buying self box...Sparc or Mac?

I am finally breaking down and will get a self machine. Is the mac version tolerable or should I just go the sun way? Can I use gnu tools to compile self sources or will I need to shell out big bucks to Sun for a developer kit? (I am a bit peeved that they are selling memory for 10 times street price...) Any input welcome. Thanks in advance.
