Hi! The next version has lots of stuff including a easily extensible UI framework, a much better object transporter, and an completely new programming environment. Privacy syntax has been removed from the language; privacy info in now kept in slot annotations. We are using annotations much more heavily than before. The VM features growable heaps and we've replaced most of the magic environment variables with facilities available from within Self. There's probably more I could add, but these are the big items. We're currently planning to get this release out "sometime next spring." -- John

hi all, I am attempting to get myself up to speed on thing object, and I have started to explore OO languages. I have a few basic questions on Self I hope you can help 1) Is there a monochrome versiom ? If so where would I get it ? 2) Is there a FAQ ? and. where is it ? 3) Is there an archive of source code for me to examine ? If so ... 4) Is there a document which gives Smalltalk to Self code equivalents ? [I'm not sure this made it out, so I'm resending it] On self.stanford.edu and mushroom.cs.man.ac.uk in the Self 3.0 patch area (self.stanford.edu:/pub/Self-3.0/patches, mushroom.cs.man.ac.uk:/pub/self/3.0/patches) are files which add various math functions to traits number by connecting to the C math library (names in parens are the C lib names): sin cos tan asin acos atan atan2 sinh cosh tanh squareRoot (sqrt) raisedTo: (pow) log log10 See transcendental.readme for more details. -Mario

The color argument must be a colormapEntry, and the only slot respected is the index slot. That is, this method passes the index of the color in the current colormap to the xlib drawing code. To get your own colors you have 2 choices: 1. Allocate your own colormap, fill it with your own colors. Install the colormap. 2. Use the default colormap. Allocate a new color. Use the index that xlib gives back to you. The current release's color handling unfortunately does not insulate you from dealing with colormaps and indicies. Bay
