OurSelf.io April update - TerminalMorph!

Hi all! Work continues on OurSelf.io at a feverish pace (literally as I got a mild case of Covid - like everyone else!) My immediate aim is to get to a place where the full cycle of Self development can happen without needing a local VM and without having to SSH into the server. The first part of this is building access from within the Self image to the underlying FreeBSD jail so that the developer can use the existing unix tools - git, ssh etc - to sync .self files to GitHub or wherever. If you start a trial now on OurSelf.io you will see a new menu item - New Unix Terminal - which will, as the name suggests, open a morph which is a unix terminal. It is a very basic terminal, just enough for running simple commands and not enough for TUI apps such as vi etc. But with it, I can (if I’m logged in and not just doing a trial) - use the Transporter to file out modules - commit those modules to a git repository - push the commits to GitHub - pull changes - read those changes in via the Transporter I can also build new snapshots, and if I save them as ‘/self/snapshot’ and restart the OurSelf world then the new snapshot will replace the existing one. (I’m thinking of this as temporary, the long term aim is to pull everything into Self so that no one needs know how and on what the image is running. But we’re a way off that) Cheers Russell

Self implementation in Python

Hey everyone! We’re a team of student engineers from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology that’s been working on a Python implementation of Self for the past academic year. We began developing this system since the Self virtual machine is currently unable to be easily run on most modern operating systems (without setting up a virtual machine to emulate older 32-bit operating systems). Our system is designed to parse and interpret Self inputs in a similar manner to the Self environment and virtual machine. The system comes with its own GUI framework to demonstrate its features that is extensible by users, and the framework itself serves as a proof-of-concept for implementing Morphic-related features in the future. The interpreter’s implementation is bootstrapped, meaning that higher-level features like lists and strings are directly imported from their respective Self modules, which we file out from the original Self system. We hope that this project will serve not only as a useful educational tool for introducing engineers to alternative programming paradigms, but also as a convenient environment for Self development. Advantages of running a Self webserver...

For our May meeting, Object Guild's Jonathan van Alteren and Erik Stel will give us a preview of Expressive Systems. Expressive Systems is a framework inspired by Richard Pawson's work on Naked Objects ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_objects ). It allows Object Guild to rapidly develop flexible applications by focusing on the design of behaviorally complete objects in the business domain. By using a novel web application architecture based on CodeParadise ( https://github.com/ErikOnBike/CodeParadise ), it allows direct manipulation of business objects by the user. The goal of the framework is to better support problem solving activities and to empower users by giving them a first-person experience. The framework is currently in a (private) alpha phase of development. There are plans to open source the framework in the future. Jonathan has been developing business applications for various Dutch companies since 2001, in roles varying from programmer to solution architect. In 2018, he got hooked on Pharo/Smalltalk and never looked back. Erik has developed both technical as well as business applications in a variety of areas using a broad range of technologies. Self on Docker

Hi guys I'm not a docker expert at all, but I thought it might be interesting to get the SelfVM working on docker, not so much for security but to make it easier to use the VM. I've put up a script at https://github.com/russellallen/dockerself (https://link.getmailspring.com/link/55C16E53-59CF-4BB0-8663-C48AB637A188@ge…) but its really short so I'll past it below. Basically the steps are: 1 - install docker 2 - git clone https://github.com/russellallen/dockerself (https://link.getmailspring.com/link/55C16E53-59CF-4BB0-8663-C48AB637A188@ge…) 3 - cd dockerself 4 - ./selfvm -s mysnapshot.self --resetXDisplays The first time you run this, it will download some docker image layers but these will be cached so it only happens once. The morphic desktop can be accessed through your webbrowser at http://localhost:10000/index.html?encoding=rgb32&password=111 The flag --resetXDisplays tells the Self world to read the X display from the $DISPLAY environment variable, otherwise it uses whatever it used last time the snapshot was saved. I've briefly tested on a Mac and Linux (a recent Ubuntu) and it seems to work. I haven't tested on Windows, if anyone wants to try that would be fabulous. There doesn't seem to be a good way to pass the entire host filesystem to the container, instead I've mounted the home directory at /host inside the container. Let me know how you go, also if anyone is actually experienced in using docker in anger and has a better way of doing things, please pipe up.
