tconsole

Ooops, forgot to ask you about a program called 'tconsole', Dave brought it up last night and he said that it sped up the console input output considerably, but he didn't know where I could get it. Color compatibility

Dave Ungar and I were amazed that our evaluator ran in color the first tin though it was developed on a monochrome system. It shows that the color in SELF was implemented very cleanly. Dave said that this was your doing, so you should be congratulated. Bravo! The only part of the evaluator that is sensitive to color/monochrome is the initialization (initColorParents / initMonoParents). Danny Epstein dje(a)scs.carleton.ca

I had used the Self command interface as my simulator's interface, just as you suggest. When you call up a new simulation it installs the top level component in a slot called simRoot*. You can then type expressions such as: set: u1 nand out To: h After: 3. inv ntran source value. run. This only works as long as you limit yourself to one simulation at a time which is no big deal since Self is single user for now. I had hoped the the name inferencer would take care of the output as neatly as this trick helped with the input, but as simRoot* is an assignable slot I had to write a printString method for each type of object. A neat side effect is that I can use the simulator interactively or place the commands in a file and _RunScript it in.

We would like to announce the release of our evaluator. The latest version can be found in the public 'contrib' directory. The evaluator is an addition to the SELF user interface which provides a command line within the user interface from which expressions can be evaluated. The evaluator runs under SELF version 1.0 only. It cannot run under SELF 1.1 because there is no postProgrammingAction. How to download the evaluator to your current directory: - Do 'ftp otis.stanford.edu' or 'ftp 36.22.0.201'. - Use 'anonymous' as the name and 'ident' as the password. - Do 'cd pub/contrib'. - Do 'get README-evaluator1.0'. - Do 'binary'. - Do 'get evaluator1.0.tar.Z'. - Do 'quit'. Self advantage

I just thought I'd point out (since I don't remember seeing it anywhere) that Self's syntax makes it very easy to use in an interactive setting. The fact that you can just define slots in lobby (or its delegates) and use them as 'commands' makes it roughly as easy to interact with as a shell -- the syntax is a little more verbose than a shell's ("copy: 'a' To: 'b'" instead of "cp a b"), but its functional nature makes it easier to deal with, so maybe those tradeoffs cancel... Once Self runs on my NeXT, I'm gonna experiment with making a command shell, to see if I like it better than csh... -- Bill burdick(a)mentor.cc.purdue.edu
