Self OS X jaguar

okay, i just installed jaguar, and downloaded all the latest Self 'stuff.' for the life of me i can't get self to work. this happened before. if i try to use the SelfDroplet, i get: Last login: Tue Jan 14 01:14:15 on ttyp1 cd "${SELF_WORKING_DIR}"/objects; ../vm/mac_osx/vmWelcome to Darwin! _project/build/Self.app/Contents/MacOS/Self -s "/Users/chresko/Desktop/Self/objects/Demo.snap" [chresko:~] chresko% cd "${SELF_WORKING_DIR}"/objects; ../vm/mac_osx/vm_project/build/Self.app/Contents/MacOS/Self -s "/Users/chresko/Desktop/Self/objects/Demo.snap" SELF_WORKING_DIR: Undefined variable. if i launch self from the command line, and try to do the the _RunScript deal, i get numerous errors which i don't understand. how on earth do you get self working under OS X, jaguar? if i edit the applescript by replacing SELF_WORKING_DIR with the correct directory, it still doesn't work. all of my self folders/directories are on my desktop. if someone could point the way, i'd appreciate it. thanks, christian

Paul, I'm afraid the cygwin version of Self is currently broken - probably because of some changes in memory allocation within cygwin.dll (cygwin 1.3.19 is the last version I'v used successfully). Unfortunatly I'm not able to spend more time on this problem at the moment. To try out Self you could try to go back 1.3.19 (I'm not sure if you can still find it). Is Self's JIT code written in such a way that there is a layer that be useful as a library outside of Self? Also, has OpenGL been considered as an alternative to using xlib for rendering? serial port on Sparc

Has anybody ever used a serial port from Self on a Sparc machine? I tried the obvious (opening a unixFile named "/dev/cua/b") but seem to have permission problems. I didn't try running Self as root. Since I needed results quickly and noticed that Squeak had a SerialPort class, I got that to work easily enough. But I would really like to continue developing in Self if possible. -- Jecel

Subject: New Self release We're pleased to announce a new Self release. The major addition is the availability of the optimizing compiler (the Simple Inlining Compiler, or SIC) for the PowerPC. As a result, Self on Mac OS X now runs significantly faster! In addition, we have fixed a number of virtual machines bugs. And the SIC has been further refactored; this should simplify the porting of SIC to other architectures. The Self homepage, at http://research.sun.com/self, contains the new release. We hope you enjoy using this more-responsive Self system, Michael Abd-El-Malek and David Ungar PS There is a problem with the Sun web servers dropping connections during a file download. Until this problem is fixed, we recommend the use of the wget Unix utility. (Wget attempts to continue a download, despite server errors, and we have found it capable of fully downloading the Self release packages.)

For Mac users, Jaguar doesn't ship with wget, but it does include curl.
