Are primitives like _RemoveSlots: and _AddSlots: going to be useable within methods in the next release?? This would be cool, because it would help with data inheritance. If you use the model for inheriting data which adds an assignable dataParent slot to objects which inherit data, it slows down message sending.. If we could use just add the slots from data parents directly, it would speed things up a lot... -- Bill burdick(a)mentor.cc.purdue.edu

Chris, I haven't got anything written yet (since Self doesn't run on NeXTs, yet, that I know of), but I'm sure interested in getting anything that you get in response, and I'll distribute any utilities I write, in the future! -- Bill

request for development tools for SELF

I am considering a big project in Self (a literate, graphical, program for my Master's thesis) and am wondering if anyone out there has built some tools for Self programming. Specifically, I am interested in *any* work on - GNU Emacs editing mode code (grind and evaluate Self expressions, complete symbols, etc.) - X interface - even a very minimal one - pretty printer - TeX style filter for printing listings - programs to draw call and inheritance graphs, cross referencers, etc. Again, if anyone has anything - at any level of completion - please drop me a line. I'll collect and redistribute anything I'm able to collect.

I am curious about the restrictions on commercial use of Self... I think industry could benefit greatly from Self. Are there any plans to relax these restrictions on commercial use? -- Bill

The problem is with the Sun-3 implementation of _IntMod; it overwrites a register and therefore leads to unpredictable results. If you avoid using _IntMod on the Sun-3 (e.g. by redefining % using _IntDiv), everything should work. Speaking of the Sun-3: who "out there" actually uses the Sun-3 version of Self? Who could not use Self if there were no Sun-3 version? Also, I have a set of stream objects (as in Smalltalk, vector & list streams, with a few extras) - about 500 lines. Is anyone interested in them?
