UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday 28th July 2021

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, July 30th. Russell Allen will talk to us about Self ( https://selflanguage.org/ ). Dating back to the late 1980s, Self is a prototype based programming language and environment in the broader Smalltalk family. Although Self has always been a niche research system, its influence can still be seen in areas as diverse as the fast VMs of Java and Javascript, in the prototype semantics of Javascript, and in the Morphic user interface used by Squeak, Pharo and Cuis. Russell Allen ( https://twitter.com/russell_allen_ ) has a background in law and computers and first came across Self in the late 1990s. Around 2008 he helped get Self running on Linux x86, set up the Self website and GitHub account, and for the last decade or so he has been helping keep Self as a project alive. In this talk, Russell will demonstrate Self as a running system, including the object semantics, language, and the multi-user Morphic development environment. He’ll talk about the current status of the project and the challenges it faces for the future. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an online meeting from home. Please note that the meeting will start later than usual, to accommodate the speaker who will connect from Australia. I have tried twice to reply to a message and both times the body of the message was removed, saying html attachment removed but there was no attachment. The mail was html format but then so was my original post and that was accepted. Strange.

Hello new user here!

Hello everyone, I am a new programmer, and I stumbled upon self. Really cool environment and love how different it is. I'm currently learning smalltalk, but I was wondering if self would be a good beginner language to learn? I was able to get the VM to run on my machine after installing the 32bit libraries. Hiding object internals

Hello! Assume an object: (| parent1* = (| a = 11. b=22 |). parent2* = (| a = 22. b=33 |). a = 1 |) Sending 'a', gives '1' as expected:-) Sending 'b' gives an error: "More then one 'b' slot was found .." What if I need the parents to hide some of their inner structure to not mismatch with other objects? Click-on-a-slot / Make-private seems to be only cosmetic/annotation thing. Regards, Jiri

Button made by 'Make Get it button' produces an error

Hello How is the 'Make Get it button' supposed to work? In a Shell evaluator: 1. Write: 42 value 2. Click 'Get it' 3. Object '42' is produced (as expected) 4. Right-click / 'Make Get it button' 5. A button '42 value' is produced 6. Click that button 7. An error is produced: Process: UI2 stepProcess Lookup error, 'copyMirror: inWorld:' not found Regards, Jiri

How to delegate a message to a parent

Hi, how is the syntax to delegate a message to a parent so when doing so the "self" is not lost? I remember there is a special syntax for that but I do not remember which one... It is very useful when implementing a Decorator on a parent. I javascript is done this way: decorate.message_to_delegate.apply(this,params); Thanks! The appearance of a data slot value does not update

Hello, If a value in a data slot is changed (by a message) the change is not reflected (displayed) in the slot/object gui until the object is collapsed/expanded. If the data slot's : is clicked the correct object (i.e. smallInt with the correct value) emerges. Anyway the value in the data slot stays not updated. --- ourself.io Edge, Windows 10 --- Is this an issue on the client (browser) side? Regards, Jiri

Self not working on macOS Catalina

Hi, I can not run Self on my macOS Catalina. If I try to open a snapshot from the Self Control, nothing happens. If I try to run the Self vm from the command line I get this error message: /usr/local/bin/Self: line 2: /Applications/Self Control.app/Contents/Resources/Self.app/Contents/MacOS/Self: Bad CPU type in executable Does anybody have the same problem? Is there a way to make it run? Thanks!
