Hi. I'm new to this mailing list and to Self. Assuming I wanted to take on the task of porting Self to the NeXT, can anyone give me some pointers to how big a job it would be, where to start, etc? I've learned much of what anyone needs to know about the port, and would be happy to talk to you about it, to help, etc. Also, anyone else who has an interest, please let us know! (E.g., I met someone at the NeXTWORLD Expo in Jan. '92 who was also doing the port...) Charles

We do have a Sun-3 version of 2.0.1 which should compile on a NeXT, modulo some Unix differences. I don't know the NeXt, so I have no idea of how much it differs from SunOS, but I can't imagine the differences would be too much of a problem. (There may be some Unix-version dependent Self code, too, e.g. in unix.self). However, you should also know that - The Sun-3 version supports the non-optimizing compiler only. Programs will run at "interpreter speed" (say, 50x slower than C). - The UI won't run - 2.0.1 still uses the Pixrect library. - We probably won't support the Sun-3 in future releases. Someone at Carleton is teasing me (no, daring me) to port Self to Mach386. (Alas, this is version 2.5 rather than 3.0+bnr2ss or bsd4ss) I'd suggest starting from the sun3 sources since. Bug with _DirPath:

If one has the situation that: % ls self-2.0.1 SelfUserSetup* self-orig/ sun3/ aa/ selfrc sun4/ mach/ small.snapshot* xhack/ self-interest.Feb93 source/ % ls self-2.0.1 RCS@ aa.self boundedNum.self poly.self~ test3.self aa-load.self aa.self~ multi-test.self test1.self tests.self aa-load.self~ boites.self poly.self test2.self window.self That is, there is a directory named 'aa' with a file named 'aa.self' in it, and one puts self-2.0.1/ and self-2.0.1/aa on the _DirPath in that order, then _RunScript reads the `file' self-2.0.1/aa. _RunScript should *not* read directories. One might want to insist that it was a simple file, but that is probably too limiting. (named pipes anyone?) Actually, I have . in my path, at the beginning, putting it at the end solves the problem.

I have placed it in the contrib directory as self-mode.el. With Lucid Emacs it also does highlighting (different fonts for comments etc.) Hope that helps. Please let us know if you improve it. -Urs

Before I get too involved in writting an Emacs mode for Self code, I thought I'd better ask if someone has already done this. If not, I'll probably base it on Lisp mode. I just made an `inferior-self-mode'
