Hi, my vacation is over, I have to continue working on something else. Therfore I have less time now to continue with the Self port. I think that there is not missing too much to finally get a running system (with all the applications :-)). It all comes down to the stack walking code. In order to give others the chance to participate, too, I have put the stuff on the web server. Everybody who likes to see Self on Linux as soon as possible, and knows how to use a debugger is invited to help fixing the remaining problems. I will continue, too, of course. Self hardware

Hi, friends! I've been without internet access for the past couple of weeks and am only now catching up with my email, including the discussions on this list. I thought you might be interested to know that I am typing this from the offices of "Merlin Computer Technology", the first company dedicated to producing hardware implementations of Self. We hope to be selling our first product (Merlin 6) by the Christmas season - I can post some details about it if there is interest. That doesn't mean that I have forgotten about software implemetantions for PCs and such! They'll be coming along. This new company will soon have its own web site, and there will also be a special web server written in Self called "Self Projects". The pages for this site will be editable and there will be space for all Self related projects. -- Jecel

Douglas, I think you get the basic idea, and your own refinement of having a common nil-like parent is kind of interesting. Though the behavior shared by these "not yet specified" or nil-like objects is curiously hard to articulate. I mean, what is the essence of vagueness? If you can come up with something, implement it, use it, and extract a lesson or two, it might be an interesting OOPSLA paper. Interpreting directed resends

When interpreting the Self bytecode of a resend (SUPER_SEND), can I always assume that the resend is directed iff there was a DELEGATEE bytecode after the last send? Scientific experiment

Hello all, I have carried an experiment which I would like to report to all, so that someone can help me explain it. I have started a standard Self world, full of objects. I opened the spy with _Spy: true. Then, slowly, I have removed slots from the lobby with lobby _RemoveSlot: '<slot name>' until the lobby became an empty object. Then I typed _GarbageCollect to try to force all objects that aren't the lobby to be garbage collected, what didn't actually happen. What happened and why does it happen? My thesis was that all objects that aren't referenced by the lobby would be reclaimed by the garbage collector. Even though this is contradictory if we take into account the fact that many objects that are named anObject aren't referenced by the lobby and don't get garbage collected after some time. Where are Self objects hung? Does anyone know? How could I garbage collect them? No, I never opened frogs at school... Memory allocation

As far as I know, an object can be allocated in three different ways: - on the C heap, that is with malloc from the OS - on the stack - on the resource area I understand that objects allocated on the stack are never garbage collected, because they are on a stack and the garbage collector doesn't reclaim them. C heap objects seem to be garbage-collectable, at least the ones allocated on spaces (a space is a kind of a C heap object). What about resources? It seems that the ResourceArea memory is at first allocated from the heap, and then it is recycled whenever there is space for a new resource to be allocated. But are resources reclaimed by the garbage-collector? I am inclined to say that the GC only happens on objects allocated inside spaces. Can I do that? Contributions to the discussion are welcome.
