hello folks, for me self is still one of the most beautiful languages I know, but the lib's are not so shapelily. So we have a kind of an Ugly Duckling here... a lady with amazing intrinsic values and horrible "lips"... Of course, we can start with some cosmetics.. We can change the UI and other stuff, but for me that doesn't look like the right way... Self has so many unfinished stuff, that I guess we will not make it better to open another bottle. Jan-Paul, if you really want to bring that stuff to the next level, let us finalize Klein first, as it is. A new platform would be cool, for sure! But this seams to me, is not the first step. This will need a lot of refactorings on different places. Over the last years a lot of people tried to enhance and clean up the self language - with more or less success. From my point of view, the main problem was that they/we tried to much in one step. So let us start with a "small" step first... let us finalize Klein and then let us make the next step. When I can help in any way, give me a note. My C++ knowledge is not really good enough, but maybe I can help in another way. If you want so, I can have a chat with your professor. I quite good connected to the german federal ministry of research and technology. if he/she is will to support you and maybe other students to work on self, i can take care of the fund raising for this project. best regards thorsten

This is a bit off topic, but there's at least the potential for getting paid to use Self so I figured I'd post it here: I'm looking to hire an engineer for a testing/tools position. The day- to-day job is Java programming, but if there are places where Self can be used I'd be happy to let it happen. FWIW, there was once and may still be a Kevo mode in the Self outliner. This is a great idea. Quick question on your approach, are you planning on writing an OpenGL wrapper object(s) in like the os namespace or are you going to focus on only the backing bits for morphic? The reason I ask is I've done the OpenGL bindings for other languages and found it rather painful to do in a portable way due to wide variations in vendor support for various versions of the family of OpenGL APIs. With the ES profiles becoming increasingly important to support, limiting the scope of this project to just the essentials becomes an interesting and necessary design consideration. glCanvas

Hey, I was thinking about starting work on a OpenGl based Canvas. OpenGL might not be pretty but I think it is the lowest level we can get to without writing our own connection to the hardware with Klein (Though I'd really love that :D). It would help port Self to windows. And would allow us to make changes to the Canvas API and the way Self handles drawing without having to change half a dozen Canvases. Additionally it would make Self more Self contained, duh.... So what do you think? Cheers Jan

Hi, don't bother to contact the ftp address, I've tried before, but cannot contact. I am interested in a Self 'user experience' journal - and a Self survival-guide/cheat-sheet to which it could contribute ( the Smalltalk community seems to recognize that "explore the Collection hierarchy" may not be how every new Smalltalker should get their bearings - to judge from what often now appears in open workspaces when a fresh image is loaded by a newbie.)
