When you look at a particle’s trajectory in a gas, say, in principle you can extrapolate backwards in time as far as you want and know where it came from at any point in the distant past. The ergodic view is however, that a trajectory is just a statistical approximation very close to the actual trajectories of a whole slew of “nearby” particles. And .. here is the interesting part .. if you go back in time on that trajectory, it gets fuzzier and fuzzier, and ultimately the initial state is utterly lost. Those particles could have come from nearly anywhere!
