We need two things for that to work:
(1) Someone to do the work
(2) Money to pay them
(1) is more of a hurdle than might be expected. People who could rewrite the VM be 64 bit are very few and far between and we can't afford Lars Bak :)
If someone is willing and competent to do one of these tasks then a bounty could be good.
