Self depends on a set of fonts being installed in your machine to work
properly. It has a way of dealing with missing fonts, but that doesn't
normally solve the problem in my experience.

I don't know the solution, but it probably is as simple as installing an
optional package in Ubuntu. I hope that someone who knows the details
will reply.
