Jason - I ran into the exact same issues when running on the 4.4 Mac VM.  To get past the last hitch you put the ircBot.self file into the same directory as the snapshot and do:

bootstrap read: 'ircBot' From: '.'


I'm keeping a written commentary as I dig into Self this time.  If anyone's interested in seeing how a very casual Self user interacts with the system I'd be willing to share it (after a bit of polish).
