I don't know for sure, but I think that the decision seems to have
been that C-like languages are easier to market, given the large
C-programmer base; and the runaway success of C++.

So the work on Self stopped and Java has taken over much of the
technology mantle.

However, the Java language is still a lot less powerful than Self.
