Dave actually explained this in the email you were replying to. By
rendering directly to the screen the hardware can't help you. If you
render to an off-screen buffer and then do an accelerated copy to the
screen it will be much faster.
I tested Self 4.2 on a 600MHz G3 iBook and, as you wrote, the dragging
is just as slow as before. So it wasn't a compiler issue. In fact, it
is still slower than on a 600MHz Pentium II machine which doesn't have
the SIC. And the Sparc, the slowest machine, beats them all. An
interesting experiment would be to use X Window on the Mac and see if
that makes any difference.
