That can't be avoided in a compiler.

Note that one of the major changes from 4.0 to 4.1 was that it is now 
much more "interpreter friendly". Neither the Linux nor Mac ports 
implement the most sophisticated parts of the original VM and I am sure 
that many people feel that with 1 GHz and up processors we no longer 
need them.
