I don't know how it is coming along (last status update with in
March), but it seems to be exactly what you want.

I don't find the Self UI slow, but that is probably because I
compare it with Morphic in Squeak ;-)

Between Java in Self (the JED thing) or Self in Java, I feel that
the first option is much more interesting. The results of PocketJava
(written in PocketSmalltalk) seem to confirm this.
