problems with Self

Re T.W. Leung's difficulty with reading in the default world:

I've examined the file "pair.self" but have found no reason for the error
that you got.  Perhaps your file was corrupted in some way.  There are
two things you can do:  try ftp'ing "pair.self.Z" again, or send me a copy
of your "pair.self" and I'll look at it.
